The Seven Finishes

Fluted Espresso profile sample by Mockridge Design

A flat swatch shows you colour. This one shows you shadow. Six half-round grooves machined into solid oak, so you can see exactly how light breaks across a fluted door through the day before you commit to the Clifton or the Reeded.

Oak Finish Sample Box
Oak Finish Sample Box Sale price£10.00

Samples are supplied as a complete set. We do not sell them individually, because the whole point is seeing the finishes against each other.

Stain Finishes Six. White, Smoke 5%, Natural, Macchiato, Dark Roast and Chocolate
Profile Sample One. Fluted Espresso, machined with six half-round grooves so you can judge how light falls across a fluted door
Material Solid European oak, cut from the same stock we use for our vanity units
Sample Size Approximately 100 x 100mm
Finishing Applied by hand in our Bristol workshop using the same stains and the same process as a full vanity
Natural Variation Oak is a natural material. Grain, figure and depth of tone vary from board to board, so your vanity will be close to the sample rather than identical to it
Credit Credited back in full against your vanity order
How You Get It A single-use code is emailed to you at the same time your samples are dispatched
Minimum Spend None. It applies to any vanity unit in the catalogue
Expiry None. Take as long as you need to decide
Lost Your Code Email hello@mockridgedesign.com with your sample order number and we will resend it

If you are torn between two finishes, call us. We look at these every day and can tell you how each one behaves in a north facing bathroom versus a south facing one.

Look Twice Judge each finish in daylight and again under your evening lighting. Warm bulbs pull the paler stains golden and flatten the darker ones
Hold It Vertical A vanity door stands upright, not flat. Prop the sample against the wall where the unit will sit rather than laying it on a worktop
Sit It Next to the Tile Oak reads differently against warm stone than it does against cool porcelain. Put the sample against your actual tile, worktop and brassware
Turn the Fluted One Rotate the profile sample through the light. The grooves deepen or disappear depending on where your window is, which is the whole reason it is in the box
Live With Them Leave them in the room for a few days. Most people change their mind at least once, which is far cheaper to do now than after a vanity is built

Before You Commit

Oak Does Not
Photograph Honestly

A screen shows you one version of a finish, lit once, at one angle, colour-managed by a device we have never seen. Your bathroom shows you a different version every hour of the day. North light cools Natural toward grey. A warm bulb pulls White back toward beige. Dark Roast reads almost black in a windowless en suite and turns unmistakably brown the moment daylight hits it.

Every sample in this box is cut from the same European oak and finished by the same hands, with the same stains, in the same Bristol workshop as the vanity you will eventually order. Nothing is printed, laminated or approximated. It is a small piece of the thing itself, which is the only fair way to choose.

Seven samples. Credited back in full against your vanity order.

Yes, in full, against any vanity unit in the catalogue. A single-use code is emailed to you at the same time your samples are dispatched. There is no minimum spend and no expiry date, so take as long as you need to decide. If you cannot find the code when you come to order, email us your sample order number and we will resend it.

Seven solid oak samples. Six stain finishes, being White, Smoke 5%, Natural, Macchiato, Dark Roast and Chocolate, plus one Fluted Espresso profile sample machined with six half-round grooves. Every piece is cut from the same European oak and finished by hand in our Bristol workshop using the same stains we use on a full vanity.

No, and there is a reason for that. Oak finishes are almost impossible to judge in isolation. Macchiato looks warm on its own and distinctly cool next to Natural. Dark Roast looks black until Chocolate is sitting beside it. Sending the full set costs us barely more than sending one and it is the only way to make a decision you will not second guess.

Because fluting is a light effect, not a colour, and a flat swatch cannot show it. The Fluted Espresso sample carries six half-round grooves machined into solid oak, so you can turn it through the light in your own bathroom and see how deep the shadows fall. That is the detail that defines our Clifton and Reeded ranges, and it behaves completely differently in a north facing room than in one with a south facing window.

It will be very close, but not identical, and that is the nature of solid timber. Oak varies from board to board in grain pattern, figure and how deeply it takes a stain. Two doors cut from different boards and finished on the same day will differ slightly. What the sample guarantees is the finish itself, the stain, the sheen and the depth of tone. If an exact colour match to something else in your bathroom is critical, call us before you order.

Look at them twice, once in daylight and once under your evening lighting, because warm bulbs pull the paler stains golden and flatten the darker ones. Prop them upright against the wall where the vanity will sit rather than laying them flat, since a door stands vertical. Hold them against your actual tile, worktop and brassware, as oak reads differently against warm stone than against cool porcelain. Then leave them in the room for a few days. Most people change their mind at least once.

Samples are dispatched within one working day and sent flat in a protective card wallet. Delivery to mainland UK is £9.95. Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland and offshore islands may carry a surcharge, so contact us for a quote. If your samples have not arrived within 5 working days of dispatch, get in touch and we will chase or resend them.

No. The samples are yours to keep, and they are worth holding on to while you finalise tiles, worktop and brassware. If you change your mind about the purchase itself, you have 14 days from delivery to cancel. Email hello@mockridgedesign.com and we will refund the product price. If anything arrives damaged, send us a photo within 48 hours and we will post a replacement set the same day at no cost.

This box covers our stained oak finishes only. If you are considering a painted vanity, call us on 0117 990 2953 or email hello@mockridgedesign.com and tell us which colour you have in mind. We will talk you through the options and what we can send.

Natural and Dark Roast sit at opposite ends of the range and account for a large share of what leaves the workshop, but popularity is a poor guide here. The right finish depends on how much natural light your bathroom gets, what your tile and worktop are doing, and whether you want the vanity to recede or anchor the room. That is exactly the judgement the samples exist to help you make. If you want a second opinion, call us and describe the room.
